Car Insurance Ram (Car Insurance). Do Glasspack Mufflers get louder with use?

Do Glasspack Mufflers get louder with use? I bought a Cherry Bomb 12" Glasspack Muffler and was surprised at how much it actually muffled the sound of my vehicle. I know that in some glasspacks, the packing is exposed because it is under a sheet of metal with holes in it, but on my Cherry Bomb Glasspack, there is a sheet of metal with holes in it and a solid piece of metal under it, so the packing must be under the solid piece of metal and not exposed. Does this make any difference in the sound of it? Will it get any louder after driving with it? Thanks.

Yes , eventually the fiberglass will burn out and the muffler will get louder. yes it will get louder after use,in my day we use to ----------- sorry better not tell you its dangerous yep'thats the nice thing about them.

Ram . How to Adjust Auto Drum Brakes

Automotive drum brakes have disappeared on all but the rear wheels of some economy cars in 2010. Disc brakes replaced drum brakes on front wheels starting in the late 1960s due to their better high-temperature and hard usage performance. Self-adjusters were added to drum braking systems of most cars starting in the early 1960s, but self-adjusters became less effective as brake shoe springs degraded from heat and rust over time. Most manufacturers left adjustment slots in case manual adjustment became necessary at a later point.
Difficulty:Moderate
Instructions Things You'll Need
Drum brake adjustment spoon
Long thin slotted screwdriver
Finger lift or jacks and safety jack stands

Step by Step :
1
Check the car's brake fluid levels to make sure there are no leaks in the vehicle's hydraulic braking system prior to adjustment. Adjusting the brakes without first checking the fluid could mask a dangerous hydraulic malfunction.
2Failure to jack cars safely may result in cars falling and serious injury.fallen jack stand image by Joyce Wilkes from Fotolia.com
Raise the vehicle on a frame lift or on jacks and stands. If jacking the car, use two stands and only raise one wheel at a time. The wheel should be able to spin freely. Locate the drum brake adjustment access slot. Most cars have them on the bottom of the backing plates behind wheels.
3Most vintage cars have drum brakes.antique cars image by Charlie Rosenberg from Fotolia.com
Remove the access cover from the slot if it has one. If it has a metal knock out, the wheel and drum will have to be removed first to knock out and retrieve the metal tang the first time the brakes are adjusted. Knocking out the tang inside the drum without extracting it could cause serious damage to the drum and brake system.
4Most 1970s muscle cars had rear drum brakes.car image by jodi mcgee from Fotolia.com
Look through the opening for a star-shaped adjuster about 1 inch in diameter. Stick the screwdriver through the slot right beside the star adjuster. Push lightly until the screwdriver touches a hard surface that yields with a springy feedback force. If it does, the brake is most likely self-adjusting. If not, the brakes adjust manually. Backing off on the adjuster will be done a little differently for the self-adjusting type.
5
Turn the star adjuster using the brake spoon to push up against the teeth, with the bottom of the opening acting as a fulcrum. Use a repetitive prying motion to do this, while turning the drum on its spindle with your other hand. You should hear a raspy sliding or clicking noise as the adjuster turns. The drum should start to become harder to turn. Stop when the drum will not turn anymore.
6
Back off on the adjuster by ratcheting it a little in the other direction. With self-adjusting brakes, push the self-adjuster arm off the star which allows it to turn back the other way with the adjusting spoon. Do this until the drum starts spinning again. You should still hear the brake shoes lightly rubbing against the drum although the drum should turn easily. Re-insert the rubber cover in the adjustment slot.
7
Repeat this process for the wheels with drum brakes. On most vehicles, it will only be the rear wheels. Disc brakes work completely differently and are inherently self-adjusting.
8
Lower the vehicle, start the engine if the vehicle has power brakes, and leave the vehicle in park. Push the brake pedal to check its depressed level and feel. It should only depress an inch or so, and feel hard against your foot. If it is still low, or the feel is spongy, the brake system should be completely checked for other problems.
Tips & Warnings
Adjusting the rear brakes will raise the applied parking brake pedal level too.

Some late 1960s and early 1970s vintage GM vehicles have their adjustment slots on the drum face itself and the wheels must be removed to access them.

Some 1960s vintage Chrysler products have two adjustment holes per wheel.

Leaking wheel cylinders indicated by dampness at the bottom of the drum and backing plate need to be attended to immediately.

A metallic grating sound from brake shoes against the brake drum as it is rotated indicate dangerous spun linings which must be remedied immediately.

Ram . How to Adjust the Rear Drum Brakes With the Tires On

Unlike disc brakes, which are self-adjusting by their design, the drum brakes commonly utilized on the rear wheels of many vehicles do require an initial adjustment whenever new linings are installed and may require routine readjustments in cases where the self-adjusters aren't working properly. Adjustment of drum brakes is a relatively simple task that most home mechanics can easily learn to perform without even having to take the rear wheels off the vehicle. Drum brake adjustment with the rear wheels in place will, in fact, allow you to adjust them very accurately.
Difficulty:Moderate
Instructions Things You'll Need
Hydraulic floor jack, or other safe jack
2 Jack stands
Wood blocks, or equivalent, to chock the front wheels
Flashlight or drop cord work light
Small straight screwdriver
Brake cleaner
Penetrating oil, with wand
Drum brake adjustment tool (also known as a "spoon")

Step by Step :
1
Place wood blocks, or the equivalent under the front tires, to serve as wheel chocks. Jack the rear of the vehicle high enough to obtain a comfortable work space beneath it. Adjust the two jack stands and place one on either side, under the axle housings for rear-wheel drive vehicles, or under the subframe for front-wheel drive. Rock the vehicle slightly to insure that it is solidly supported on the stands.
2
Locate the brake adjustment access opening on the rear of the backing plate. This is normally located at the bottom of the plate. Remove the rubber plug, if there is one present, using a small straight screwdriver.
3
Inspect the self-adjuster through the access opening, using a flashlight or work light. Spray it with brake cleaner. Insert a plastic wand into the spray head of a can of penetrating oil. Carefully spray the exposed adjuster threads, taking care not to get oil on the brake linings. Allow it to penetrate for a few minutes.
4
Insert a brake spoon into the access opening far enough to engage the teeth on the adjuster wheel. If the adjuster is working properly, it will only turn in one direction and you will hear a clicking sound as you turn the adjuster wheel.
5
Place one hand on the tire and slowly rotate it as you tighten the adjuster. Keep this up until you feel resistance on the rear wheel. When you feel a moderate resistance, stop. Repeat this procedure on the other wheel. Try to get the resistance on both wheels as equal as you can.
6
Remove the jack stands and lower the vehicle to the ground. Press the brake pedal. It should feel firm and solid. Start the vehicle, put it in reverse and slowly back up and stop a few times. This will even out the rear adjusters.
Tips & Warnings
A common straight screwdriver, of appropriate size, can be substituted for a brake spoon in some cases.

If you don't hear a noise when you turn the rear adjuster wheel, or it will turn in either direction, move it a few turns and observe the threads on the adjuster. They will get longer if you're adjusting the brake shoes outward, toward the brake drum. If they seem shorter, turn the adjuster in the opposite direction.

Some adjuster access openings will have a stamped metal cover which will have to be knocked out with an appropriate chisel and hammer in order to gain access. You can buy rubber plugs for the access opening at most auto parts stores.

Due to differing designs, some imported vehicles may have the access opening at the top of the backing plate. Inspect the backing plate carefully on these vehicles.

Some vehicles have no brake adjustment access opening at all. If you don't see a stamped or notched opening on the backing plate, you will be unable to perform the adjustment. Take the vehicle to an authorized dealer or other reputable brake repair shop.

Take care not to over-tighten the adjusters and lock a wheel up. Stop when you feel moderate resistance.

Alien (or hex) ufrenches Some of the screws or fastenings on your vehicle may have odd-shaped holes in the centers of their heads that require special Allen wrenches — L-shaped rods that fit into the holes (see Figure 2-7). If the center hole is hexagonal, the wrench you need is sometimes called a hex wrench. You can buy a set of assorted-sized Allen wrenches for under $15. Part I: Getting Started. Figure 2-7: Allen wrenches. Socket Frenches A good set of socket wrenches, shown in Figure 2-8, can really make the difference between enjoying your work and killing yourself over it. Socket wrenches come in sets for a wide variety of prices, depending on quality and how many there are in the set. Sets can include either a mix of SAE and metric sockets, all SAE, or all metric pieces. Unless you've decided to become a mechanic, you can buy an inexpensive set of basic socket wrenches suitable for your vehicle for less than $25. Figure 2-8: A socket wrench set.

.Chapter 2: The Way to Your Car's Heart Is through Your Toolbox 2 7 Your set of socket wrenches should contain the following basic items: A variety of K-inch or %-inch drive heads or sockets: The #-inch, %-inch, and %-inch sockets are the ones you'll use the most, unless you need a metric set. The metric sizes most often used are 10,11,12,13, and 14 mm. The word drive refers to the size of the square hole in each socket where it attaches to the ratchet handle. It's easy to remember that the smaller the drive, the smaller the job you use it for. A X-inch drive is for tiny areas; %-inch drive is for the next range of sizes, typically up to SAE % or 18 mm metric; &-inch drive is for up to SAE IK, or up to 25 mm; and other drives up to 2 inches are for really big jobs (you won't need one of these monsters). You can use adapters to convert sockets of one drive to fit handles of another drive. A spark plug socket: This is the large socket with a soft lining to hold the spark plug securely without damaging its soft jacket when you remove and insert it, or when you drop it on the floor by mistake. Spark plugs come in two sizes, so make sure to get the size that fits the spark plugs in your car. Your owner's manual may note the spark plug size. At least one ratchet handle, to which you can fit any of the sockets: Most sets have two or three handles with at least one adapter. You may want to add additional adapters to extend the handle to different sizes and adapt it to different drives. Figure 2-9 shows the wide variety of sockets, handles, and adapters available.
